Silver perch, scientifically known as Bidyanus bidyanus, are highly sought after in aquaponics systems and farm dams.
Their adaptability and beneficial feeding habits make them ideal for maintaining a balanced ecosystem, as they naturally consume weeds, algae, and small insects. However, in the wild, their numbers are sadly declining due to habitat disruption caused by invasive species like carp.
Despite these challenges, silver perch are prolific breeders, with the ability to produce up to 100,000 eggs per kilogram of body weight. They are also recognised as one of the top three healthiest fish to eat in Australia, thanks to their rich content of omega-3 fatty acids, which provide significant health benefits.
Whether you’re looking to enhance your aquaponics setup or improve the health of your farm dam, silver perch are an excellent choice.
Silver Perch are available at Narrabri Fish Farm once a year between January and February.
When you receive your fingerlings open the foam box and remove the heavy duty plastic bag containing the fish, do not untie the bag until you are ready to release them. Float the bag on the top of the pond/tank water for approx 10 mins or until the water inside is about the same temperature.
Open the plastic bag by untying or cutting it carefully. Gradually mix the pond/tank water with the bag water until the bag is full, tip the bag into your pond or tank and the fingerlings will soon swim out into their new home.
