Eel-Tailed Catfish, scientifically known as Tandanus Tandanus, are remarkable freshwater fish native to Australia. Growing up to 90 centimeters and weighing up to 6 kilos, these resilient fish can live up to 15 years.
Characterised by their large heads, thick fleshy lips, and tubular nostrils, Eel-Tailed Catfish have tough, smooth skin that aids in their survival. They naturally breed in farm dams by building nests, showcasing elaborate courtship behavior. Remarkably, one or sometimes both parents protect their eggs until they hatch.
Feeding primarily on yabby shrimps, molluscs, and other bottom-dwelling organisms, Eel-Tailed Catfish are considered by many to be the finest freshwater fish to eat. Their white flesh boasts an excellent, delicate flavor, making them a prized catch.
Endangered Status: Eel-Tailed Catfish are an endangered species and are listed as protected. This status highlights the importance of responsible farming and conservation efforts to ensure their survival for future generations.
Available at Narrabri Fish Farm twice a year, these fingerlings can be purchased from December to January and June to July. Ensure your farm dams thrive with these exceptional fish, renowned for their quality and taste.
Warning - Eel-Tailed Catfish contain venom in their dorsal and pectoral fins. Always handle them with care using a net and gloves.
- Receiving Your Fingerlings
Upon receiving your fingerlings, open the foam box and carefully remove the heavy-duty plastic bag containing the fish.
Do not untie or open the bag until you are ready to release them. - Acclimating the Fingerlings:
Float the sealed plastic bag on the surface of your pond or tank water for approximately 10 minutes. This allows the water inside the bag to gradually match the temperature of the pond or tank. - Releasing the Fingerlings:
After the temperatures have equalised, carefully open the plastic bag by untying or cutting it.
Gradually add small amounts of pond or tank water into the bag to help the fish acclimate to the new water conditions. Continue this process until the bag is full.
Once the bag is full, gently tip it to allow the fingerlings to swim out into their new home.
By following these steps, you ensure a smooth transition for your Eel-Tailed Catfish, promoting their health and well-being in their new environment
