Yabbies (freshwater crayfish) are a unique and fascinating addition to any freshwater aquarium. They are incredibly adaptable, thriving in a wide range of environments, from rivers and lakes to dams and even backyard ponds.

These freshwater crayfish are perfect for aquariums, as they can live in almost any freshwater body and are easy to care for. They have the unique ability to survive long periods of drought by burrowing into the mud, making them resilient and long-lasting. Yabbies are scavengers, feeding on plant material and detritus, and they help keep the tank clean. They are also fascinating to watch as they interact with their environment.

Whether you’re an aquarium hobbyist or just starting out, these hardy yabbies will bring life and interest to your freshwater tank.

Care Tips for Aquarium Yabbies:

  • Yabbies prefer slightly alkaline water with a pH between 6.5 and 8.5.
  • They are best suited for tanks with plenty of hiding spots, such as rocks, caves, or driftwood.
  • While yabbies are generally calm, they can be territorial, so it's important to provide ample space and hiding places if keeping multiple yabbies.
  • Yabbies molt as they grow, so a secure place to hide during this vulnerable stage is essential.
Important Yabby Care:

Yabbies require less acclimatisation compared to fingerlings, making them easier to introduce to your aquarium.
Upon receiving your yabbies, it’s important to handle their transfer carefully to minimize stress. Open the foam box near your tank and gradually acclimate them to their new environment. Before releasing the yabbies, add a few cups of aquarium water into the box. This helps them adjust to the water temperature and maintain optimal moisture levels. Once acclimatised, gently release the yabbies into your tank.
