Ideal for stocking in farm dams, Murray Cod (Maccullochella peelii) are a resilient and iconic species native to the Murray-Darling Basin. Historically, they were the most abundant large fish in this river system at the time of European settlement. Unfortunately, their numbers have significantly declined over the years, making conservation and sustainable farming practices more important than ever.

Murray Cod inhabit a diverse range of environments, from small, clear, rocky upland streams to silty, slow-moving rivers. They are typically found in deep holes with ample cover, such as large rocks and fallen trees. Recognisable by their large mouth, cream-white belly, and distinctive green mottled pattern, Murray Cod are the largest freshwater fish in Australia, capable of reaching over 100 kilograms and growing up to 180 centimeters in length.

Known for their rapid growth, Murray Cod can gain up to a third of their body weight within a year, as they are voracious eaters, even consuming their own kind. These fish also have remarkably long lifespans, often living between 30 to 35 years. In farm dams, they can naturally reproduce, ensuring a sustainable population for years to come.

Murray Cod fingerlings are typically available at Narrabri Fish Farm every December, ready to be introduced into your farm dam for a healthy and thriving aquatic ecosystem.

Important Fish Care:

When you receive your fingerlings open the foam box and remove the heavy duty plastic bag containing the fish, do not untie the bag until you are ready to release them. Float the bag on the top of the pond/tank water for approx 10 mins or until the water inside is about the same temperature.

Open the plastic bag by untying or cutting it carefully. Gradually mix the pond/tank water with the bag water until the bag is full, tip the bag into your pond or tank and the fingerlings will soon swim out into their new home.
